Some Misconceptions about HIV Transmission
Monday, October 6th, 2008Many people fear that HIV can be transmitted in other ways besides the well documented routes such as sexual contact and sharing needles with an infected person, infected blood transfusions, or babies born from infected mothers. Some of the more common misperceptions about HIV transmission include contracting HIV from the environment such as the air. Scientists have documented that HIV cannot survive and is unable to reproduce outside its living host therefore making the possibility of environmental transmission extremely remote. Another misperception is the ability to contract HIV from kissing, biting or through saliva, tears and sweat. Although blood can be exchanged during kissing and biting, there have been no documented cases of a person contracting HIV while conducting these behaviors. Miniscule amount of HIV have been found in tears and saliva of an infected person but the amount is so small that HIV cannot be transmitted from one person to another. A final misperception of HIV transmission is through biting and bloodsucking insects. HIV does not reproduce and does not survive in insects therefore HIV cannot be transmitted through insect bites.
Increase Education is the Key to the Prevention of Aids
Monday, October 6th, 2008As widely publicized, HIV transmission occurs when a person has sexual contact or shares a needle and/or syringe with an infected person. Additional causes, although rare, occur when a person becomes infected through tainted blood or babies are born from infected mothers. Although prevention efforts through education have reduced the number of HIV infections, approximately 56,000 Americans still become infected annually. Because of the continual proliferation of aids in society, many agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are now funding and heavily promoting educational programs to educate the public, and people at high risk, in an effort to further reduce the number of HIV/AIDS transmission cases.
Aids is nearby
Thursday, October 2nd, 2008Today,Aids is not a new thing. It happens everyday. According to reliable statistical data, there are almost three million people get Aids every year.Believe it or not,Aids is nearby.
We all know, there are three ways of AIDS transmission: unprotected sex, blood transmission, mother to child transmission. Here,I just want to talk about sex.Cheating on your family is really a risk behavior now,not only for your family but also for yourself.Sometimes, happiness is just a step from tragedy.I know how much sex partner a young person has, even he just is 20 year old. Some one told me,a 23 years old girl ever have 60 love parteners, some of them even are One-night Stand partner. Are they healthy? Are they worth you to give anything to them even your life? I donn’t think he know more about these person. So,if you cann’t respect yourself,Aids will not respect you, too.
Remember, Aids is nearby.Be careful!
Red Ribbon Dedicated to Aids Prevention
Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008AIDS is the scourge of modern times. The dreaded disease has already taken millions of life around the world. The ‘Red Ribbon’ is a symbol that stands for the fight against the deadly HIV virus that causes AIDS. The Red Ribbon has become a visual symbol which helps people demonstrate their compassion for those suffering with AIDS and also their caregivers. The symbol is actually inspired by the yellow ribbons which were given as honor to American soldiers who took part in the Gulf war. The Red Ribbon symbol continues to be a potent force in the fight against AIDS as well in the creation of increased awareness against the prevention of the dreaded disease.
Maybe we shouldn’t try to stop Aids?
Friday, April 25th, 2008I know it sounds like a callous thing to say. However, think about Nature. How does it “thin” out the heards, with disease. In the wild “only the strongest survive”. This ensures that future generations of mammals are stronger. Same thing when starvation sets in, the strongest feed on the weak. So, maybe we are supposed to let nature take it’s course.
Remember, the Earth can only support so many people. So, maybe this is the way Nature is trying to help us maintain a healthy supply of strong children by letting the weaker die. If everyone survived then we would quickly reach the population limits of Earth. Wouldn’t we?
The Governments Role
Saturday, April 19th, 2008A lot of the attention for AIDs prevention focuses on sexual contact. But we can’t forget the medical factors. Last year in Peru, litres of donated blood were destroyed because they found the medical blood bank had blood infected with HIV. The first question this should makes all think is “how did the blood pass screening tests?”- if there were any. AIDs prevention, doesn’t just start with condoms and educational programs. It also begins with governmental responsibility and their ability to protect their citizens. Regulations and directorates need to implemented to avoid outrageous situations like in Peru last year.
Is it Ever Acceptable?
Saturday, April 12th, 2008Animal testing is always a touchy subject. I generally find myself on the wrong end of both sides of the argument as I disagree with animal testing on what I consider non-vital experiments like make-up products and cosmetic medicines (medicines for symptoms that are not critical or dangerous). But when it comes to life saving drugs, I believe they must be tested before being introduced into the open market. The thought of an AIDS cure that has not been tested is a scary prospect, is it could lead to a cure causing unexpected complications and leaving the patient in a worse condition than before the treatment.
Responsible Government?
Sunday, April 6th, 2008Aids prevention begins with better education about the risks and issues involved. But when we are misinformed about a subject as important as aids prevention, things can only go from bad to worse. As in the case of South Africa, the Health Minister once said that the cure for aids was eating “garlic and beetroot”. This is outrageous misinformation, from a governing body no less! And now, the next expected President in the ANC party, Mr Jacob Zuma has sexual relations with an aids infected girl – and his response? “I took a shower”. More needs to be expected from a government of a country suffering an aids epidemic.
