Seal Hunting in Canada

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

On the 15th March of this year, the Canadian Fisheries Minister, Gail Shea claimed that more than 50000 Greenland seals would be permitted to be killed by fishermen in the commercial hunting activities in late March of the year 2010. Gail Shea said that 330,000 Greenland seals would be killed in this year, increasing 50000 seals compared with the 280000 Greenland seals killed last year. The number of gray seals and hooded seals hunting in this year will not change and the quantity is 50000 and 8200 respectively. The minister explained that Greenland seals in Gulf of St Lawrence and East Newfoundland Waters increased this year so they would kill more Greenland seals. She also said that Greenland seal hunting would assist those fishermen who live on fishing along costal regions to support their families.
Commercial activity of seal hunting in Canada is the largest hunting for marine mammal animals in the world. Last year, 280000 baby seals about two months old underwent the fate of being hunted. An observer said that Canadian government ignored strong protest from European countries and Canadians. He also said that Seal market was shrinking and its price was also decreasing so the Canadian government’s behavior was very stupid. In the year 2009, Russia has decided to stop seal hunting in the area of the White Sea but the Canadian government still takes their own course. In the past several years, more than 1 million seals have been killed by Canadians.
As for the process for seal killing, it is very cruel. If the killed seal is a seal mother, she would be cut open on the spot. If it is a seal father, it would be hooked through the hole in the skull and taken to processing factories. As for baby seals, they would be taken away from their mothers by force and be beaten to death. Besides human hunting, seals have to face up the danger from ice because there is not enough thick ice. The ice is very thin so the seal mother has to litter on the land. When the babies come out and go back to the ice on which they live, they would drown because of lack of ice. According to a report from Environment Department in Canada, the thinnest ice appeared in the year 2006. In 1981, the phenomenon of thin ice also happened in Canada and many Greenland seal mothers moved to the Prince Edward Island and the beech of Nova Scotia to produce babies. Consequently, those babies drowned when they went back to the thin ice. Warm weather can hinder the conformation of ice. As the temperature has been increasing in recent years, much ice has melted so seals can find less and less habitats. If human continues hunting in a large number, extinction of seals can be expected soon.
Seal hunting is strongly protested by European countries so the hunters turn to Asian and Eastern European market. In Russia, Poland and Ukraine etc, hats, shawls and other decorations made from seal skin are fashionable. Health products made from seal oil and whip are sold very well in China, Japan and Korea. Like European countries, maybe countries in Asia also protest seal hunting and seal products, the Canada would consider killing seals less.

Elephant Hunting

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

When we talk about elephant, we will associate it with beautiful ivory in high value. We even compare universities as beautiful “Ivory Tower”. Actually, elephants can help people do much work besides their priceless ivory. However, many kinds of animals are confronted with hunting and elephant is not the exception. Here we can focus on elephant hunting in Africa.
Since the year 2003, Africa has become the biggest market for ivory trading in excess of the ivory trade in Asia for the first time. Institution of Elephant Trade Information System and organization of Monitoring of Illegal of Elephant Hunting, for the first time, tried to systematically investigate buyers and sellers for ivory trading. They found that most African ivories were smuggled and wholesaled to Japan and some states in America near to Gulf of Mexico etc. After engraved, beautiful ivories were sold to those markets. But situation has changed since 2003. Various types of ivories could be found in African small markets. Organization of Monitoring of Illegal of Elephant Hunting revealed that the “hot spots” for elephant hunting were mainly located in East part of Congo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, the north part of Gabon, the south part of Chad etc. As for Nigeria, elephant hunting is particularly serious and ivory trading market in the country is quite large because the government can not offer strict control.
Elephant hunting is also very terrible in South Africa though there is Kruger National Park which is a wildlife protective zone with the best natural environment and the most kinds of animals in the world. The park has provided the paradise of rehabilitation for more than 140,000 African elephants. Those elephants are gradually eating up the whole park because of over-reproduction. In order to maintain the ecological balance, South African authorities have killed in a large number. During the year 1967, the number of elephants in Kruger increased up to 6500. The government started to kill elephants to control the growth at that time but the hunting was forced to stop because of strong protest from conservationists. In the year 2005, according to the report from the Times, South authorities planed to kill 7000 to 10000 elephants. Helicopters would drive them to a small and narrow place and rangers would shoot them by darts daubed with anesthetic. Then adult elephants would be killed by bullets and small ones would be removed to other protective zones. In the year 2008, the South African government also dismantled the laws of forbidding elephant killing. However, deliberate hunting was considered to be protested by conservationists again at time because they thought that elephant was a kind of gregarious animal with wisdom and sentiments and they had complicated social structure. If they were killed in large number, they would revenge human beings. Actually, conservationists’ anxiety is quite true. In 2007, a local man in Zambia and his two daughters were killed by elephants. Another woman and her daughter from England stayed in Zambia for holiday were crushed to death in the National Park.
Overproducing of elephant hunting would bring bad effects for human but deliberate elephant killing in a large number also causes unexpected results for human security.

Tiger Decrease

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The year 2010 is the year of tiger in Chinese lunar year and all Chinese people hope that they can be more powerful and prestigious. In a word, they wish that the year of tiger can bring good luck to them. When we are celebrating the coming of the year of tiger, we ought to pay more attention to protecting tigers all over the world because the quantity of tigers is dropping day after day.

The hometown of tigers is in China and they live in northeast of Asia at first. Then they move to south and west and now there are 8 subspecies of tigers which are Balinese tiger distributing in Indonesia’s Bali island, Javan tiger in Indonesia’s Java island, Caspian tiger in Turkey and middle and west part of Asia, Sumatran tiger in Sumatra, Siberian tiger in Siberia and northeast part of China, south China tiger in south part of China, Indo-Chinese tiger in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar and China and other east parts of Asia, and Panthera tiger in India, Himalaya and other cool places. The first three kinds of tigers have become extinct. And the other 5 types of tigers are also decreasing. So what are the reasons behind it?

Firstly, overhunting and casualties are made by human beings. At the beginning of 20th century, people engaged hunting more and more with the development of hunting tools and transportation. Some hundreds of tigers were killed every year. In early times, people thought that each part of tiger body can be used for preventing and curing illness even including tiger urine so some illegal trading for tigers increased too fast. In addition, some hunters tend to place hunting sets everywhere in the forest. So once tigers are hurt, they have less chance to survive and sire. Secondly, living environment of tigers is destroyed. Tigers mainly live in primitive forest and secondary forest but a large-scale deforestation by humans damages their tranquil life then they have to scatter in different places. Such separation slows down tigers’ reproduction. And their ability against enemie also becomes weak. Thirdly, preys decrease too many. As we all know, tiger is a kind of predator and they eat other animals. However, many small animals are put into plates for human dinners. So if tigers do not have enough food, how can they survive? Fourthly, direct conflicts between human beings and tigers sometimes occur. When tigers attack people or catch poultry, people may kill them secretly. The number of tigers is not large, especially in northeast part of Asia and when a tiger is killed, maybe the type will be extinct in the whole region because multiplication can not continue.

In conclusion, tiger decreasing even extinction is closely related with human unreasonable activities. Therefore, it is necessary for all countries to take pressures to protect tigers and severely punish illegal hunting behavior. People should also improve their tiger-protection awareness and dare to expose those who hunt tigers for trading. The year of tiger may bring us more good luck and power. If tigers are extinct, do you still think the year of tiger with enough meaning?

Gray Wolves Temporarily Put Back on Endangered List

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Gray wolves in the US Rocky Mountains are back on the endangered species list after four months unlisted.  The US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) decreed in March that the wolf population, in the western states of Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, no longer needed federal oversight. Wolf control passed to the states, which made plans to open hunting season on the predators this fall. Environmental groups sued.  In a recent finding, a judge sided with the environmentalists, temporarily putting wolves back on the list until the court case is finished.  Gray wolves are still considered endangered in the rest of the continental U.S., except in a region around the Great Lakes.

Six Sea Lions Killed in Oregon

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Last May 2008, six sea lions have been found shot in Oregon, presumably as a result of annoyed fishermen blaming the animals for a lack of fish.  The January before, US federal officials recommended killing about 30 nuisance sea lions a year in the river, to keep them from gobbling up salmon. Officials went ahead with that, but in the face of a lawsuit from the Humane Society, they have been instead trapping animals and transporting them to nearby zoos. It looks like someone took advantage of these traps to shoot the captive animals before they could be spirited away.  The trapping program has been entirely put on hold while the killings are investigated.

South Africa Lifts Ban on Elephant Culling

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

South Africa has lifted a 13-year ban on elephant culling, to help manage the flourishing pachyderm population.  Elephants were once close to being wiped out in many parts of the continent, but have more than doubled in number in South Africa since 1995.  A government assessment report suggests this could lead to the loss of crops and infrastructure and the infection of livestock as a result of elephants having breached veterinary fences, thus allowing the mingling of wildlife and domestic stock and direct injury or loss of human life.  Culling, with strict provisos, has been legalized as a last resort, the government asserts. Some conservationists have condemned the action, warning that it may encourage ivory poachers and could threaten populations elsewhere.

Large-sized Animals Facing Extinction in Central Africa

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

In an alarming report released by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFR), large mammal species such as elephants and gorillas could be wiped out within 50 years in Central Africa if bush meat hunting is not curbed.  Up to 1million tons of bush meat is consumed in this area annually.  But experts warn that an outright ban on bush meat hunting will have dire consequences on the rural poor.  Bush meat provides up to 80% of protein and fat in rural diets and there are no acceptable substitutes if a blanket ban on hunting is executed.  The report recommends that policies should be developed to both protect endangered species and allow sustainable hunting of common game.  One of the keys to resolving the problem is to differentiate between rural poor hunting to survive and those using bush meat for commercial purposes.

Poaching of South Africa’s Rhino Population Intensifies

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

A recent report affirms that South Africa’s rhinoceros population is under imminent danger due to the dramatic increase of rhino deaths by poachers this year.  An alarming 12 white rhinos have been shot, a sharp increase of just two or three killed in previous years.  The rhinos’ valuable horns are harvested and sold on the black-market where there is a huge demand in Asia, particularly China, for the horns’ so-called medicinal and aphrodisiacal qualities.  South Africa’s biggest game reserve, Kruger National Park, last year also reported a slow and steady increase in rhino killings – at least 70 over six years.

Different Ways to Stop Animals Hunts

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Animal hunting is a menace that several governments are trying to fight around the world. Animals are hunting mostly for money and in some cases even for pleasure. Trading in various body parts of animals is an international trade these days. One of the best ways to stop animal hunting would be to stop buying a product that uses any of the body parts of animals. Concerned authorities should also increase vigil against hunting of animals in forests. Similarly governments should come out with tougher laws to stop indiscriminate hunting of animals. All these acts would act as a deterrent to hunting of animals and would help save several species from total extinction.

Seal, the other fish…

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the latest attempt by the Canadian governmental bodies to find an excusable avenue for the mindless slaughter of seal pups. Somehow, the scientists in Canada have a different idea to what exactly is a fish than the rest of the world. Seals in Canada are classified as “Fish”. Considering the biological differences between fish and mammals I find this truly remarkable. And why have they listed such a confounding statement – because animals on the Canadian fish list are not considered capable of feeling pain, suffering or fear. I fear what they teach in the biology classes in the schools there – but at least that feeling of fear means I wouldn’t be classed as a fish in Canada!

Out foxed?

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

In this modern day and age, how do we justify the murderous “sport” of fox hunting? How can anyone find it acceptable for upper class socialites to canter around on their pure bred horses while they let a pack of dogs track down and rip a tiny fox to shreds? Every year the government tried to ban the sport, but with the British House of Lords having the final say on any rule, it took an exceptional amount of time to finally put the bill through. One small animal against a pack, and with the ultimate action being ravaged by several frenzied dogs – how can anyone find this acceptable?

Animal Hunts

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Nowadays, people always think about themselves, and seldom care about the animals around them. They are also living things like human being. Unfortunately, some animals were hunted, eaten and even sold. This is an abominable thing which despised the animal. In order to prevent hunting animals, we should take some actions to protect them and punish the criminals. First, the animal’s habitat should be built in a quiet and clear place. Then, volunteers are needed to work for the association of protecting animal. To propagate the knowledge of protecting animals to people is also very important.

Animal Hunts

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Animals are our friends !
The hunters hunt the animal like elephants, tigers, bears, giant pandas, reindeers, and different kinds of birds. They do it just for money. They cut the elephants’ ivory, tigers’ teeth, reindeers’ antlers, bears’ paw and most of the animals’ fur. Because of it the numbers of animals become small and small.
Stop doing it, animals always help us, but we do nothing and hurt them.

Give me the original face of the environment

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

In these years, the environment is damaged by the humans very seriously. The factories make so much poisonous air that many trees and rivers are full of harmful things. The animals are also facing the loss of their home. Many hunters hunt the animal for its fur and bones. They only want money, but don’t care the damage that they did. We can’t see the clear water in the rivers and the lakes and we also can’t see the birds flying in the sky. All the damage that the humans have done totally changed the face of the environment. I don’t want to see the tears on the animals face.I don’t want to see the bodies of the fish floating on the rivers and lakes.I just want everybody give a hand to protect the environment before it is too late! Please give us the original face of the environment!

Animals Hunts

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Cats, dogs, pigs, birds and even sheep are all human’s friends. We are fair on the erath,we dont have the right to kill anything that i think so.

The unnescesary hunting of animals is harmful to the environment from which they come. If an animal becomes rare or endangered in an area, then any other animals or plants in that environment are also affected, due to the disruption of the food chain. For instance, if a major prey animal dies out, then all its preditors will also suffer form starvation. Also, if all the preditors are wiped out, the prey will become overpopulated, and use all of thier food.

The prevention of hunting animals to extinction is a very important thing that we all need to do. If one animal becomes extinct it will inevitably lead to the extinction of other animals connected to the original in the food chain. The more animals that become extinct, the worse the world’s situation will become.

I think as sentinent human beings we could learn only to hunt the animals that we need to eat and let the other animals take care of themselves. Anthother possibility is that we could breed animals just for

Animals are our future, so if we kill all the cuddly and different creatures we will live in a very boring world. Is this statement a fair summary of the reasons for conserving the animal population, or is it a simplistic, rubbish argument?

hunting animals mustbe abandon, if not ,wo we will be punished by the earth~~

If you dongt believe it, u can have a try,but u will be punished one day~
